2-22 21 letters from Sir Charles Locock to his "dear old friend", Dr William Kerr, 1857-1875, n.d. Locock wrote regularly and at some length to Kerr at least once a year around Christmas (at which time Kerr habitually sent Locock a turkey, and Locock a barrel of oysters to Kerr), and more often in some years. His letters are a mixture of personal, family, social and professional matters. In the December 1862 letter he mentions having been to Potsdam to attend the confinement of the Princess Royal

Biographical note

Sir Charles Locock (1799-1875) was a leading accoucheur, with the largest practice in London. He was appointed Physician-Accoucheur to Queen Victoria in 1840 and attended the births of all her children. He retired in 1857. He was president of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society in 1857, president of the Obstetrical Society of London, elected FRS in 1864, and created DCL (Oxon.) in the same year. There are entries for him in the usual biographical works, an article by Russell C. Maulitz, "Metropolitan medicine and the man-midwife : the early life and letters of Charles Locock", in Medical History, 26, 1982 and a biography by Charlie Lush, Lord deliver-us : a personal history of Sir Charles Locock, Bt., Queen Victoria's favourite physician and celebrated accoucheur (2004)
