Kidney: disseminated microsporidiosis

Disseminated microsporidiosis This is a high power view of kidney from an HIV-positive patient dying with disseminated microsporidiosis. It shows severe interstitial inflammation and tubular damage. One of the tubules is filled with cells that contain abundant microsporidia (arrowed). They are seen as fine, blue-staining dots within the tubular epithelial cells. The infection was diagnosed in this patient by finding microsporidia in the urine. H&E stain.
