St. Camillus de Lellis was canonised by Benedict XIV in 1746, declared (along with St. John of God) the patron of the sick and hospitals by Leo XIII in 1886, later by Pius XI in 1930 their patronage was extended to include nurses and nursing in the catholic faith

Saint Camillus was the founder of the Order of Camillians or the Order of Clerics Regular, servants of the sick
