About this work
Description
Wife of Isaac Blight, a ship-broker shot and killed at Deptford in 1805. Richard Patch was convicted of the murder and executed on 8 April 1806. Patch apparently blamed Mrs Blight for causing him to commit the deed. Simpson was an artist who was in court and drew portraits of Patch and Mrs Blight during the trial. His portrait of Patch (impression in the NPG) was published on 12 April 1806 by Edward Jeffrey, Pall Mall. On the case see B.B. Cooper, The life of Sir Astley Cooper, 1843, vol. 2, chapter VI, pp. 144-148
