    London, to commence his medical education. At London Dr Baillie was placed in a situation more favourable for obtain- ing medical information, than has fallen to the lot of many. His two maternal uncles, Dr William Hunter, and Mr John Hunter, were at that time two of the most eminent medical practitioners in Britain, and decidedly two of the most instructive teachers of medicine. Dr William Hunter was at that time one of the most distinguished teachers of Ana- tomy in Europe. Nor was the reputation of John Hunter in any degree inferior to that of his brother William. Be- sides extensive employment as a celebrated Surgeon in Lon- don, he had the principal charge of a large and well regulated hospital, St George's in Westminster. Both these uncles were peculiarly attached to young Baillie. Both were equally anxious to promote his acquisition of medical know- ledge ; and they vied with each other who should commu- nicate to him the most important instruction. He was, however, more particularly under the eye of his eldest uncle, Dr William Hunter, having received and ac- cepted of an invitation to lodge under his roof; and, in the house of an eminent teacher of anatomy, who lived a bache- lor, he unavoidably received instruction at almost every meal as well as at every lecture. He was soon employed as his un- cle's assistant in the dissecting room; and even to a very early period of life, was, to a certain degree, conjoined with him as a teacher of anatomy.
