About this work

Description

The bottom design refers to the proverbial story of and ox leading peasants to the Zenkōji temple (in the modern province of Nagano), which carried the message that one should take advantage of opportunity as it arises. All Japanese were supposed to visit Zenkōji at least once, but for those who couldn't attend, a subsidiary temple was built at Kawaguchi, north of the city, which is shown here
