    (P (RE FACE. Diseases causing aberration and restriction of nervous power are apparently increasing in number and severity^ ivkile recoveries are not proportionally increasing. The inference is either that the effects of ordinary remedies are too transient., that the capacity of the System to respond to remedial impn'essions is too limited, that the most efficacious remedies are still waiting to be used, or that these causes combine to furnish obstacles to restoration. The vital powers offen suffer fatal exhaustion from misdirected and abortive efforts for recovery. The aim of treatment shoidd be, not to p)roduce a high degree of nerve stimulation, ending in wasted nervous energy., but to secure direct and yiermanent restorative eff'ects, vnthout cost to vitality.
