James Christopher Alan Penn is from Stockwell in London but originally from Birmingham. He is going to stand on the plinth and be himself, he is going to listen to music with his earphones in. He will be listening to organ music, one by Bach and one by Sorabji. He likes music and entertainment that is long, perhaps as a reaction to pop music. The moment that changed him was listening to Verdi's Requiem in 1986/1987. He plays the piano a little. He thinks that grammer school was the making of him as a person intellectually but that it stunted him a bit socially being at an all boys school. He is a film researcher at BBC worldwide stock division. The most important thing in his life is his wife, they have very different interests. He is doing the project for himself. He doesn't think the project will change him, except for his relationship with London.
