About this work

Description

The Subcommittee to consider the future of the CCU was established in 1979 to regularly review the future of the Division, assessing the case for the continuance of the unit every few years. As part of the review, the subcommittee compiled a report examining the progress of the unit, including its current and future research plans. This report was then considered by the MRC in order to establish the direction of the unit.

In 1984, a Selection Committee was established to appoint a new head of Division, but no suitable candidate was found. In 1987, the Subcommittee made recommendations for the future of the CCU in light of Tyrrell's planned retirement in 1990.

The CCU closed in 1990, following a decision by the MRC to discontinue research into the common cold at the centre.

Includes correspondence concerning future plans for the CCU, including closure of the unit in 1990; meeting papers of the Subcommittee to consider the future of the CCU; and correspondence relating to dispersal of laboratory equipment, specimens and CCU records.

This series also contains correspondence relating to ARC Harvard Hospital Unit Reunions, the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the ARC-Harvard Field Hospital Unit and CCU, and some correspondence regarding Tyrrell's plans to write a history of the CCU.
