About this work
Description
The structure of this comprehensive collection of well-thumbed recipes would indicate that this was the working reference volume of maybe a country doctor, a non-surgical domestic science medic, a pharmacist, midwife, or the steward of an estate. The contents include 263 medical recipes, 93 domestic recipes, 60 veterinary recipes and 12 cooking or wine recipes. There are a number of sub sections. viz. Symptons, Balls (veterinary), lotions, hair, powders, drinks, potions, perfumes &c. Loosely inserted is a folding hand-written table headed "The infectious Fevers" which lists 8 fevers with a table of the stages of each fever - "incubation", "appearance of rash", "average duration", "Quarantine period". A few interesting recipes, for example - "Rat Poison", "Cheltenham Salts in Powder", "Love Powder", "Liniment for Rheumatism"- etc.
There is no obvious ownership evidence
Most of the entries are dated between 1835 and 1841.
