About this work
Description
Household recipe book of culinary receipts, which also includes some medical and household receipts. The book was originally purchased from a stationer in Westminster, so the owner probably had some connection with London.
Partial list of contents at the front of the volume, going up to page 39. The first 26 pages consist solely of culinary receipts for foods such as Vermicelli soup (p. 1), 'To roast a haunch of venison' (p. 14), Potted lobster (p. 46), and Porcupine pudding (p. 70). The remaining pages include some medical and household receipts amongst the culinary ones. Two loose receipts for eye water are inserted at the front of the volume.
Medical receipts for the same condition are sometimes found on the same page. Receipts include:
For the hooping cough, p. 65
For piles, pp.60, 67
Disordered bowels, p. 73
Mr. Fishers cooling medicine, p. 73
List of 'Questions concerning a servant's character' is included at the end (p. 77), showing the high social rank of the compiler, something which is also indicated by the inclusion of expensive ingredients such as venison, lobster and asparagus.
