Biographical note
The Transcultural Psychiatry Society was a voluntary organisation that operated from the mid-1970s to 2008, initially comprising academics and mental health professionals from different cultural backgrounds who were interested in race and (counteracting) racism in psychiatry. It was formed after an International Congress on Transcultural Psychiatry held at Bradford in 1976. The focus of early meetings was on working culture, with issues such as diagnosis and incidence of mental ill health discussed. A new constitution was adopted in 1985 which focused its aims on tackling racism and promoting equality for all in mental health services.
The main activity of the Society was in organising conferences to highlight racism in psychiatry. It also produced newsletters and bulletins and provided official responses to government documents.
