"In 1980 the first reports of dependence on therapeutic doses of benzodiazepines began to have an impact and the Committee on the Review of Medicines published a report detailing the ineffectiveness of long-term use of these drugs. General practitioners were faced with the possibility that they had many patients who not only were not benefitting from their medication, but who also might be dependent on the drugs and therefore might find it difficult to stop taking benzodiazepines.
