Another photograph (this catalogue no. 5i) on the verso of the same mount as the present photograph shows a metal plaque giving information about the institution: it is Cardiff Sanatorium, opened on 8 August 1895, under the Health and Port Sanitary Committee of Cardiff; architect Wm. Harpur M.I.C.E. Acording to the report of the Medical Officer of Health to the Health and Port Sanitary Committee for 1899, patients admitted to the Sanatorium in that year had diphtheria, scarlet fever or typhoid fever
