Sanitation: ventilated improved pit latrine

Ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrine This is a row of double VIP latrines for a school in Lesotho in southern Africa. Note the screened pipes which prevent flies from entering or being able to escape from the latrines. Environmental improvements such as the provision of latrines for schools help to remove human faeces from the environment. This strategy reduces the number of breeding sites for eye-seeking Musca sorbens flies.
