Description
Apparently a portrait of a camp follower (soldier's sweetheart or prostitute). "Nancy of the Dale" is a song about a woman attached to a soldier in military service. It formed part of the play The camp by R.B. Sheridan (1778). The verses in the lettering are quoted from the poem Autumn by James Thomson (1730)
