Biographical note

Jean Noël Hallé (1754-1822) was a French physician who came from a family of painters. He was the first person to hold the post of Chair of Hygiene at the Ecole de Santé in Paris, and later worked at the Collége de France. He was a member of the Société Royale, the Académie Nationale de Médecine, and the Académie des sciences.

A pioneer of hygenic reform and a major advocate of vaccination, Hallé was also involved in defending Antoine Lavoisier when the latter was tried for treason in 1794.
