Bad blood.

Hepatitis C is a virus that causes chronic liver disease and can destroy the liver so that a transplant is the patient's only hope. This is an account of neglect by the British Blood Transfusion Service through which hepatitis-C infected blood was transfused, untested, into patients until 1991 - although the polymerase chain reaction test became available in 1989. When it was known that infected blood had been passed on, a policy decision was taken not to notify recipients. This was in spite of the fact that early treatment with interferon may limit the damage of the infection. It is estimated that up to a quarter of a million people in the U.K. may have been infected through blood transfusion with hepatitis C.
