    2 A.D. 1873.—N° 1406. Provisional Specification. Arnold’s Improved Instrument for Vaccinating. in the top thereof to correspond with the number of points or scarifying instruments on the spindle; on the under side of the box or on the opposite side to the apertures there is a lever for rotating the spindle when required; also in some other convenient position there is a pin with button for releasing the spring round spindle as hereafter 5 mentioned. To use the instrument the lever is pressed back and the points are thrown out through the apertures (there may for example be three points and three corresponding apertures, but I do not limit myself to this number as less or more might be used); the nut is then turned to adjust the distance the points should project, which done the 10 lever is again pressed in the contrary direction and the points return to the inside of the instrument, which is then ready for application and use. To vaccinate place the aperture end of the instrument to the arm or other part, press the side button before mentioned, the spring is then 15 instantly released and the points or scarifyers are instantaneously forced into the arm or other part of the patient, which is thus prepared for the lymph.
