    T A.D. 1873, 18th April. N° 1406. Instrument for Vaccinating. (This Invention received Provisional Protection only.) PROVISIONAL SPECIFICATION left by James Arnold at the Office of the Commissioners of Patents, with his Petition, on the 18th April 1873. I, James Arnold, of the Firm of Arnold and Sons, of 35 and 5 36, West Smithfield, in the City of London, Surgical Instrument Makers, do hereby declare the nature of the said Invention for “A New or Improved Instrument or Instruments for Vaccinating,” to be as follows This Invention consists in the construction and employment of in one 10 and the same appliance or instrument of a series of points or scarifying instruments in such manner that the points are protected when not in use, but when required can be readily and almost instantaneously produced all as hereafter described. The points or scarifying instruments are carried on a spring spindle 15 the position of which is capable of being adjusted as required by spindle and nut in order to regulate the depth to which the instruments may be required to enter the skin of the person to be vaccinated. The spindle is supported in the sides of the box which has slots or apertures
