Friars Carse Accounts

Estate accounts showing cash received and paid along with charges and discharges. The volume contains detailed descriptions of goods, names and rents received. At the back of the volume there are seven pages under the heading. 'Population of Wamphray 1697', copied from a book apparently kept by the Minister of Wamphray, listing the names of inhabitants in various houses and farms. There is a book label showing the name George Graham on the first page.

Mrs Elizabeth Crichton was life-rented the estate of Friars Carse from her late husband, Dr James Crichton, in 1823. James Crichton had purchased the estate in 1809. Friars Carse is situated to the north of Dumfries on the west bank of the River Nith, neighbouring Ellisland Farm which was tenanted by Robert Burns between 1788 and 1791. After Mrs Crichton's death in 1862 Friars Carse was passed to James Crichton's grand-nephew, John Crichton, who sold it in 1873. The estate was purchased by the Board of Trustees and Directors of Crichton Royal Institution in 1895 to be used as a country residence for patients. The Board sold the estate in 1909.
