About this work

Description

Minutes books of the Metropolitan, Eastern, North-Eastern and Midland (later East Midland) Federations seem to have been deposited with the Institute for safe keeping; copy minutes sent to the Instiute for information, with some annual reports, do not appear to have been accumulated on a regular basis, as they only survive from the 1960s and there are gaps in the sequences. Some of the files also contain newspaper cuttings pertaining to district nursing in the region.

Biographical note

The Federations enabled affiliated district nursing associations to meet together to discuss matters of common interest, and they sent resulting recommendations to the Institute. Each Federation appointed eight representatives to serve on the Institute's Council and eight to serve on the Joint sub-committee of Counties and County Boroughs. The Federations received subscriptions from all their member associations, from which they could pay the expenses of these representatives, but after the introduction of the National Health Service, the Institute paid each Federation's 'reasonable expenses' directly. Local Health Authorities and affiliated Nursing Associations were represented on their area Federations
