Apply now to take part in a free project for 14 to 19-year-olds to explore poetry and creative writing, and how they relate your own wellbeing and other important issues.

What you’ll do

Working with poet Theresa Lola, the Young People’s Laureate for London, you’ll explore the role of writing on our own wellbeing. This will involve learning about how to write, to edit and to perform, and go on a two-night writing retreat to the Kent countryside.

You’ll meet several experts who will inspire you to think about poetry in different ways, and you’ll experiment to find your own voice.

What you’ll get

You’ll learn how to analyse and understand poetry, articulate your ideas and work collaboratively. These skills will be relevant to related courses you’re currently studying, as well as future education or employment in this area. Your food and London travel costs (zones 1–6) will be covered during the project. We will provide transport to and from the retreat and all retreat costs will be covered.

When it is

The project will take place over three Saturdays in February, a four-day project during the February half term (when the retreat takes place) and one Saturday in March.

  • Saturday 1 February – workshop 1
  • Saturday 8 February – workshop 2
  • Monday 17 February – workshop 3
  • Tuesday 18 to Thursday 20 February – residential (workshops 4–6)
  • Saturday 29 February – workshop 7
  • Saturday 7 March – workshop 8

After the workshops, you will have the chance to perform your work.

How to apply

Download the application form (DOCX 54kb) and access document (DOCX 47kb)

The access document has information about accessibility for the project and trip, and how we are able to support you.

As part of your application, you’ll be asked to complete some activities, which are designed to help us choose the right people to take part in the project.

Fill out the form and send it along with your application activities to rawminds@wellcomecollection.org by the deadline:

  • Final deadline: Monday 13 January at 20.00.

Next steps

We’ll select a group of 15 people to take part, based on application tasks and availability. Priority will be given to people who can commit to all sessions.

What others have said about RawMinds projects

It has been an amazing experience! Highlights were getting the game to a stage where we can work on it, making the music and playing it in front of others.

It was a lot of fun. I always really looked forward to going to the sessions in the morning, before it had actually started.

Young person from RawMinds Spring 2018 Improvised Comedy Project

The project was very interesting and fun, and the fact there was no expense or fees for all the opportunities we got is amazing.
