A harbour in which bales of goods are being traded between two merchants: falsehood and fraud govern the transaction, aided by an untrained clerk; representing the fraudulent use of commercial law. Engraving by H. Goltzius.

Lavater comments that even though he has never seen the faces shown here and on frame no. 9519L (engravings of which were both published on the same page), and does not know their names, he can immediately tell them to be businessmen. Lavater says of this portrait, "nature appears to have formed him to be essentially useful. ... Faces such as these might be called physionomies of persons whom we cannot do without"

The print has extensive lettering, including mention of the various goods traded, and of the country of origin of the traders. Goods include: Salters; Druggists and grocers; Silkmen and silk-throwsters. Countries include: Armenia; Norway; Portugal; Turkey
