Chunar, or Chunargarh, was the favourite residence of Warren Hastings, governor-general of India. Hastings was Hodges' patron
The sandstone rock upon which Chunar is situated was also the major source of building material for the city of Varanasi

Shiva's hair is fastened in a top knot and his forehead is decorated with a crescent moon, a red dot and three horizontal yellow lines; he wears a saffron skirt and three strands of beads around his neck; he holds a string of beads in his right hand; a silver stream flows from his hair and under the deerskin to form the river Ganges

The mausoleum is the subject of another, later, view by Thomas and William Daniell, published in their series Oriental scenery, I, with lettering "The Mausoleum of Mucdoom Shah Dowlut, at Moneah, on the River Soane". See Mildred Archer op. cit.
Early views in India, Mildred Archer, London 1980, p. 42. The Muslim saint, Makhdam Shah Daulat, had died in 1608 and was interred in Maner, a village near the junction of the rivers Son and Ganges, 25 miles (40km) west of Patna. His mausoleum was later erected by a disciple.

A ghat is formed by steps, especially a flight of steps at a river bank, where washing, cleansing and bathing take place
The Dasasamadhi Ghat, where Brahma was said to have sacrificed ten horses, is one of the five most celebrated places of pilgrimage in Varanasi, and also the main approach to the river (Archer op. cit.)
