False-coloured scanning electron micrograph of a drosophila tarsus, the part of an insect's leg furthest away from its body. Two hooks or claws visible in the centre of the image are used for attaching to rough surfaces. Below the claws lie the tarsal pads (pulvilli) which are covered in hairs (tenet setae). An adhesive substance is secreted through these hairs, which allows the fly to attach to smooth surfaces. <I>Drosophila melanogaster</I> (also known as the fruit fly) is commonly used in scientific research, particularly in the fields of developmental biology and genetics. Horizontal width of image is 103 micrometres.

ceramic material, monetite (CaHPO4). Monetite
crystals are electrochemically deposited onto
titanium making the metal more compatible with the
body. This can be used in applications such as
artificial hip joints and prosthetic tooth-root
posts where bone bonding and the stability of the
implant are very important. This image
demonstrates the coating successfully encouraging
cell growth: the cells look normal and are growing
well over the surface. Nanoscale interactions are vital for the success of cells' interactions with manmade materials.

A single enteropathogenic <I>E. coli</I> in the human small intestine appears as a tiny red and green speck. The intestinal columnar epithelial cells extend from the blue luminal surface to the bottom of the picture and beyond. The large red ovals are the nuclei of epithelial cells. This highlights the difference in size between bacteria and eukaryotic cells.
