What brought you to our website today?

A painting by Apelles described by Lucian as follows: "On the right of it sits Midas with very large ears, extending his hand to Slander while she is still at some distance from him. Near him, on one side, stand two women: Ignorance and Suspicion. On the other side, Slander is coming up, a woman beautiful beyond measure, but full of malignant passion and excitement, evincing as she does fury and wrath by carrying in her left hand a blazing torch and with the other dragging by the hair a young man who stretches out his hands to heaven and calls the gods to witness his innocence. She is conducted by a pale ugly man who has a piercing eye and looks as if he had wasted away in long illness; he represents envy. There are two women in attendance to Slander, one is Fraud and the other Conspiracy. They are followed by a woman dressed in deep mourning, with black clothes all in tatters: she is Repentance. At all events, she is turning back with tears in her eyes and casting a stealthy glance, full of shame, at Truth, who is slowly approaching". Here Midas is enthroned on the left, Slander approaches him holding a burning torch in one hand and dragging a praying young man by the hair with the other. On the right Repentance and Truth enter

The print on which this painting is based is one work in a set of the four elements, in this case fire. The Latin verses on the print explain the beneficial and dangerous effects of fire. The alchemist is warned by a young woman, probably Prudentia, not to waste his money on the "fallacious art of alchemy" which deceives many. The alchemical equipment is that of the 16th century, including a round alembic with outlets for steam

Faith is seated in the centre. Around her are four enemies. On the left, Death aims an arrow at her, but Faith in response holds out her hand inscribed with the name of Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew characters), because Jesus had cancelled out the sin of Adam and thereby conquered death. In the left foreground, Schism or Heresy, arguing from the text of a book, has the appearance of an angel but from behind can be seen to have a skull and the body of a snake attached to her belt: Faith's defense is a shield with a cross on it, as the shape of the cross is a union of separate parts. In the right foreground, a woman representing the World and worldly values offers wine from a cup, holds a chest of coins, exposes her breasts and has luxuries on the ground in front of her: Faith resists with the rewards of martyrdom which two angels confer on her; between them the name of God appears in Hebrew characters (Yahweh, in the form of the Tetragrammaton). On the right, Satan brandishes torches representing violence, murder and cruelty: Faith responds from her heart, where the Holy Ghost appears. Behind Faith, two trees: on the left an oak, on the right a palm, representing the Old and New Testaments

The shelves in the surgery are full of bottles labelled: "modestie", "honnestete", humilite", "obeissance" etc., and many more 'good ' qualities. A practitioner pours a liquid entitled: "sagesse" into the mouth of a patient who sits on a commode excreting fools. The other practitioner holds another patient on a wooden stretcher while his head is placed in a furnace from which all follies, vices and fantasies are being expelled
