What brought you to our website today?

The Gordon Riots took place in London 2-9 June 1780. They included an attack on Newgate Prison. The man wears a ribibon on his hat inscribed "No Popery"; a bubble from his mouth says "Down with the Bank"

George Clarke was bludgeoned on the head in riots at an election in Brentford, Middlesex, on 8 December 1768, and died on 14 December 1768. The Irish chairmen of the election, called Laurence Balfe and Edward McQuirk, were tried for murder, having incited the riots, but were cleared as a result of the conclusion by a committee of the Company of Surgeons that his death could have been caused by fever instead by the blow to his head

According to Jackson, loc. cit., the house was the Star Tavern near Temple Bar in the Strand, which housed a brothel of which the landlords were Peter Wood and his wife. On 1 July 1749 some sailors at the house were robbed of their valuables. With some colleagues they returned in the night, destroyed the furnishings of the building and ejected the women. On the following day, one of the sailors, Bosavern Penlez, with two others joined a mob inflicting further violence on the house. Penlez was hanged at Tyburn on 18 October 1749

Gilbert Bourne or Bourn is described as a canon of St Paul's cathedral who, after the execution of Lady Jane Grey in 1554, prayed for her in public: "On 13 August 1553, less than a month after Mary I's accession, Bourne was almost killed when he preached a sermon at Paul's Cross, denouncing the protestant changes of Edward VI's reign, and singing the praises of Bonner, deprived of the bishopric of London in 1549, but soon to be restored. The crowd that gathered to hear Bourne's sermon became so angry with his remarks that they began to riot, and someone threw a dagger at Bourne that narrowly missed its target" (Oxford dictionary of national biography, s.v. Bourne)

From the right, one man, who exclaims 'By g- you'll be jockey'd mynheer', approaches another man who stands in front of the table, with his back to the viewer as he retorts 'We shall loose the scrip'. The one on the left has a low wall in front, and has a pediment in the centre of the facade: and does not have the same geographical relation to the prison as the Surrey House of Correction had
