Receipt book: ff 1-2 have several imprints of a stamp with a gryphon's (?) head "Mr W F Gostling"; not clear if he is the same "William Gostling Esqre, Drs Commons London" whose signature appears on f 5. A loose sheet "Memorandum from International Hotel Employe Society (Geneva Union)" dated March 9 1891 and addressed to "Miss Gosling" [sic] has been inserted between ff 6 and 7
ff 7v-12 contains a tabulation of garden vegetables and herbs with hints on their culture, from "Page 60 Vol 1752, Gents Mag"
ff 14- 15 Index [incomplete] to contents
ff 17v-64 Culinary, household, cosmetic, and medical recipes in several hands. These include "To render shoes waterproof" (ff 19v-20), a "certain cure for the ague, but must not be given to pregnant women as likely to produce Abortion" (f 20v); curry powder (f 21); "to destroy bugs" (f 26), "Mary Gostling's Receipt: Sea-weed steeped in rum is a very good thing to strengthen the limbs of a young child" (f 41). There are a number of medical prescriptions together at ff 33v-36, including several "Baby's receipts" and "Sir Astley Cooper's application to sore nipples".
Between ff 56v and 57 there is a prescription with a note to 'Dear Annie' about its use. ff 64v- 233 are blank, there is a recipe "to be taken when the cough is troublesome" on f 233v.

The volume is continued in several different hands. Some Indian connection is suggested by recipes for "kebobs" '"pilau", "currie powder" and there is some evidence for European travel or contacts. 
Pasted to the inside front cover: Unrecorded advertising broadside, printed in English in Venice, for the famous theriaca fina or Venice treacle, a honey- or molasses-based composition thought efficacious against poisoning, sold at the "Aquila Nera" [At the Sign of the Blak Eagle] in the Merceria San Salvatore. 
Medical, household, veterinary and culinary recipes: including "To make a Triffell with Apricocks"; "To make Chocolate as prepared for the King"; Metheglin; "An Excellent rect. for ye heartburn brot from Italy by the Duke of Shrewsbury"; "Mr Porter's Receipt for Nervous disorders"; "Directions for Mr Hoare to mend his Blood"; "A Cure for the Jaundice", attributed to Dr Porter of Essex; "A Loyn of Mutton Kebob'd"; "Dr Radcliffe's Specifick for the Cholick"; "A Tincture for the Gout or Cholick in the Stomach" also ascribed to Dr Radcliffe; "Fromage Fondu" (initialled "RH"); "Dr Boerhaave's Tincture for Rheumatism or colds attended with pains in the Bones" (also ascribed to "Dr Borehave", "For a Consumptive Cough or Spitting"); "Dr Porter's Nervous Electuary"; "Hierapicra"; "To make a Pilau after the East Indian manner"; several medical prescriptions ascribed to Dr Harrington; several treatments for disorders of horses; "For the Worms. Still's type of joint disease in children 1902-05

The following is an interim description which may change when detailed cataloguing takes place in future:
Professional papers of Professor Robin Coombs. The material is wide ranging and covers his work at Cambridge University Department of Pathology comprising experimental and clinical research, immunology teaching, his posts at Cambridge and his other related professional activities. Notably included is correspondence with other scientists, files on antiglobulin reaction and sero-morphology, allergic reaction, coeliac disease, rheumatic arthritis, blood transfusion and immuno-haematology, and much material relating to his research into cot death. There is also a complete bound set of his published papers.
