He is having blood let from his right arm: the operator has opened an artery by mistake. Left foreground, a tormentor points to a basket of surgical instruments (saw, knives, tourniquets). Left background, one tormentor with a medicine bottle, the other pouring medicine into a bowl. Left of the doctor, one man points to his missing nose, another complains about his damaged stomach. Right background, the doctor is offered a pill which he looks at with misgivings

Falstaff is dressed as Herne the Hunter, the ghost of a former Windsor Forest ranger. A man standing by a tree holding a torch and wearing the mask of a satyr may be Sir Hugh Evans, a character in the play. On the right a man and a woman steal away in the darkness: they may be Fenton and Anne Page, who get married

An episode in the medieval romance, Cantar (Leyenda, Historia) de los siete infantes de Lara. On the orders of Doña Lambra, her servant had struck one of the sons in the face with a blood-soaked cucumber. The brothers resolve that if the servant does not run away from them, they will excuse the insult on the ground that he is mad, but if he does run away, they will avenge the insult with the sword. He attempts to flee, and they attack him with swords, driven on by personifications of Madness and Revenge, who fly above them. One of the brothers seizes Doña Lambra's cloak in order to smear it in the servant's blood. Two men on the right try to dissuade the brothers from violence
