What brought you to our website today?

The first part in a two-part series from the Cancer Research Today strand. This programme looks at the clinical aspects of cancer and recent advances in treatment. Two factors are particularly pointed out: the sensitivity of the primary tumour to the chosen treatment, whether surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy; and the presence or absence of metastases and their response to therapy.

This programme reports on the side-effects of radiotherapy, which can be devastating and occasionally fatal. Hundreds of women in the UK who received radiotherapy treatment for cervical, pelvic and breast cancer developed burning of those areas, blocked bowels, damaged ribcages, nerve damage, and some have had to have their bladders removed. This could be as a result of overdose, and bad practice on the part of the medical teams. Pressure groups want consultants to give patients more information on potential side-effects of radiotherapy, as well as form a standard of treatment throughout the UK.
