Two musicians are playing instruments: a lute (centre foreground) and a violin (right). Three men and a couple hold the song sheet printed with musical notation. The youngest of them, who was holding the sheet music for the lutenist, turns away from the party with an expression of revelation; the song-sheet is engraved with music and the words "Amour qui me ment nuict et". The man embracing a woman can be interpreted as the prodigal son. In the foreground are two bottles in a wine-cooler

The long-awaited reconciliation between the Prince of Wales and his father at Kew on 12 November 1804, represented as the parable of the Prodigal son. They had disagreed over the provision of Princess Charlotte's education. The Prince of Wales remained ill-humoured throughout the formal interview
