Ninth annual report of the medical superintendent of the lunatic asylum, for the counties of Salop and Montgomery, and for the boroughs of Much Wenlock, Shrewsbury, and Oswestry. 1853 / [Salop and Montgomeryshire Counties Lunatic Asylum].

Card advertising Dr. Jayne's Expectorant (containing opium) and Dr. Jayne's Liniment. These were supposed to cure cold, cough, sore throat, bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough and consumption. The card shows two young boys in classical dress. One has a quill pen behind his ear, a scroll in his hand, looking at the other (in spectacles) who is holding open an oversized book, pointing to the words. A large, green branch with spiky leaves is growing up behind the book.

Publishers' and printers' details given in P.A.H. Brown's 'London publishers and printers' (1982) imply a date between 1848 and 1853; most likely dates are 1848 or 1849, as there was a cholera epidemic at the time. The 'powders' and 'pill' suggested as a cure include opium.

Patent for "improved medicinal mixtures for the cure of rheumatism, tic-douloureux, lumbago, sciatica, and such like complaints" made from laudanum, oil of juniper, spirits of wine, spirits of nitre, spirits of turpentine, alloes, oil of lavender.

Specification of Ebenezer Oliver : mixture and embrocation for rheumatism, &c.

Patent for "an improved compound for curing disorders of the bowels, cholera, diarrhœa, and dysentery".

Specification of Thomas Sleight : medicinal compound.

Patent for a medicinal product for "the curing of cataracts in general, specks, caligations, vascular opacities of the cornea,&c." by "the name of Lepine's Ophthalmological Powders and Collyrium" which includes sugar, opium, mercury and belladonna.

Specification of Eugene Antoine Lépine : powders and collyrium for diseases of the eye.

Refers to the London cholera epidemics of 1832, 1849 but mostly to the 1854 one. Various therapies are mentioned, camphor particularly, which "was considered a homoeopathic remedy" and Dr. James' Powder. Port and opium are mentioned as having a positive effect.
