Fangguanyan monastery was located in Yongtai county about 30 kilometres from Fuzhou, on the upper reach of the Min River. Here three monks of Fangguangyan are at the meal table. The youngest one was a boy 'full of vivacity'. According to Thomson their diet comprised only vegetables. However, he noted that all three of them were smokers and liked to indulge in tobacco. Thomson also suspected that the older man smoked opium. Fujian, being a sub-tropical country, harboured a variety of tropical diseases, including malaria. At the time people regularly used opium and tobacco as a prophylactic against malaria and as relief for miasmic fevers. The right-hand frame of the photograph is crossed through

Fangguanyan monastery was located in Yongtai county about 30 kilometres from Fuzhou, on the upper reach of the Min River. It was for Thomson the most interesting of all the sites near Fuzhou. During his visit he befriended the three monks dwelling there. The old priest shown in this photograph was blind and, according to Thomson, quite infirm. The younger one however was an 'able bodied, good natured youth'. Each day they strictly kept their ritual observances, as recorded here. Ce patronage que la misère et l' indigence trouvent dans la chaire des églises, en attachant un juste prix à la charité,en dirige mal l'’emploi et popularise le métier de demander l'aumône d'une manière fort particulière, car le mendiant offrant l'occasion au riche de faire une œuvre méritoire, croit exercer une profession utile, celle de ne rien faire sur la terre, en aidant les autres à monter au ciel. Mexico, comme Naples et Madrid, fourmille de pauvres importuns; toutes les maladies les plus dégoûtantes, les difformités les plus repoussantes, vous assiègent et vous poursuivent dans les lieux public, dans les cafés, dans les églises , comme un argument puissant; pour livrer l'obole et soulager les souffrances humaines. Tantôt c’est une femme voilée au coin d'une rue, dont le nouveau-né mort ou vivant, vrai ou postiche, est étendu à ses pieds.
