A film about the necessity of sterilising surgical instruments before and after surgery which looks at the main aspects of aseptic operating techniques as sanctioned in the late 1930s. Includes an historical introduction. We are shown the steam sterilization of dressings, the boiling of instruments and antiseptic solutions. The theatre is cleaned, an instrument trolley laid out. Scrubbing up is shown and swabs counted and checked. The operation field is isolated and instruments washed.

Large wounds are both liable to self-infection and cross-infection, but by virtue of the large area exposed are particularly vulnerable to airbourne infection. This part of the film demonstrates a unit at the Birmingham Accident Hospital designed specially to overcome airbourne infection. Shots of models and the actual layout show how the unit is ventilated and air treated before entering the unit. The efficacy of the air treatment and other precautions is demonstrated by means of the slit sampler, by which it is possible to estimate the bacterial purity or otherwise of the air. Air samples taken in the unit are compared with those taken in other parts of the hospital. The film then demonstrates the technique of a dressing, beginning with the preparation of the dressing room and the team to receive the patient in the ward. The preparation of the patient in the ward and his transfer to the dressing room is followed. The functions of each member of the team and the handling of the patient are clearly demonstrated. The taking of a swab for a bacteriological examination and the dressing of a leg burn by a strict no-touch technique, the application of a penicillin cream and the final covering and bandaging of the wound are shown. This part concludes with examples of the results with patients with varying severity of burns.

This film clearly demonstrates the necessary facilities to ensure a steady service of sterile instruments and dressings. A diagram demonstrates the courses of self-and cross-infections. This part deals with treatment of relatively small wounds where the risk of airborne infection is not very great, the emphasis being placed on the risk of contact infections which can be prevented by a good aseptic dressing technique. This is first demonstrated by showing the technique for one nurse in a factory surgery, followed by the technique adopted by a team of nurses in the Birmingham Accident Hospital dressing out-patients' station. A model is used to show the general layout of the dressing station. The film, beginning with the out-patients' waiting room, follows the patient through the whole sequence of events passing throughe patient passes through the inspection room and one if the dressing rooms for treatment, every stage from the removal of the bandages, the no-touch technique for the removal of the inner dressings, disposal of soiled material and the doctor's inspection of the wound and method of prescribing treatment in the inspection room. The patient is then followed stage by stage. In each case the necessary facilities to ensure a steady service of sterile instruments and dressings and the cleaning and sterilising of used instruments are clearly demonstrated together with the functions of each member of the team. This film illustrates various methods of sterilisation for the total abolition of germs from every surface and material which approaches the field of operation. Techniques shown include the use of an autoclave, sterilising using boiling water, boiling oil, a naked flame, antiseptics, paraform vapour and dry heat. We also see at the end how a patient is prepared for an operation on the knee.
