What brought you to our website today?

The visit took place in March 1855 at the Brompton Hospital, Chatham, where Barrett made sketches of the scene. Queen Victoria was accompanied by the Prince Consort and their two eldest sons, the Prince of Wales and Prince Alfred (later Duke of Edinburgh)

Above, Queen Victoria, having ascended into heaven, is seated enthroned on a cloud. Prince Albert stands on the left. Around her, natives of the countries of the Empire lay gifts before her. Below, Lord Salisbury, standing with the Government behind him, reads an address of condolence to King Edward VII, seated. Behind the king stand members of the Royal Family. In the background to the lower scene, a crowd of people stand, beyond whom are seen factories, iron ships and a steam train representing engineering triumphs of the Queen's reign

Peel is represented as a tinker carrying a bucket in one hand and a box labelled 'budget' on his back; he looks out at the viewer singing 'I mend kettles and cans, I hoop mugs, pottles, and pans, and over the country I trudget it. I eat when I'm hungry, I drink when I'm dry, and carry my all in my budget'. In his box is a book labelled 'income tax'. A rival (the Duke of Wellington) sits to the right claiming 'blowed if he hasn't taken away my best customer, I'd better give up the trade!' Right, Queen Victoria holding a saucepan labelled 'finance' reassures her husband 'I really think this will hold now it was always running out as the other man mended it'. She addresses her remarks to Prince Albert who holds their baby son Prince Albert Edward

The Evelina Hospital was founded in 1869 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild. His wife Evelina died in childbirth in 1866
