What brought you to our website today?

Scrapbook of manuscript and printed material relating chiefly to deafness and hearing aids. Dates are 1797-1882 but most of the material covers 1797-1848.

Scrapbook mostly includes mounted correspondence between Henry Pointer and fellow surgeons and physicians, as well as between Pointer and his patients. Includes autographs and obituaries for physicians and surgeons, a number of which were signed to the certificates given by them to Henry Pointer when attending their lectures at the time he was studying for the practice of surgery and medicine. Also includes a list of customers of the ear trumpet and requests for sales. 

The scrapbook also contains press cuttings, which cover a wide range of topics, including monarchy, religion, inventions, books and art sales, nature and plants, obituaries, and various miscellanea.

Pointer, Henry: Scrapbook relating to deafness and hearing aids, etc.

This is a valuable and important archive for an independent medical research institution of worldwide importance. Although for many years it existed on limited resources without guaranteed funding, numerous distinguished British scientists were associated with it for longer or shorter periods, and its international reputation drew scholars from many countries.
The collection consists primarily of papers on the Laboratory, 1900s-1990s. The papers of T S P Strangeways (formerly Pigg), the founder of the Laboratory, however, have been retained among the archives of the Laboratory (Section A), along with some small groups of papers of other individuals who worked there (Section K); the latter include Professor M. Abercrombie, C. Robinow and E. Brieger. There is also some Radium Commission material, 1932-c. 1948 (Section L), and some material relating to the work undertaken at the Strangeways during World War II under government auspices (Section M).
Unfortunately there are some significant lacunae in this collection. The surviving annual reports do not make up a continuous sequence, and the survival of correspondence has been somewhat haphazard. However, it should be pointed out that there is a series of Annual Reports 1929-1950, and other material about the Strangeways, among the papers of F G Spear, former Deputy Director, held in the Wellcome Library's Archives and Manuscripts collection as PP/FGS.

Strangeways Research Laboratory

This is the complete surviving archive of the NBTF from its foundation to merger with Birthright in 1993; The records consist of the papers of the National Birthday Trust Fund itself, the Joint Council on Midwifery which was in existence from 1934-1940, some personal papers of Juliet, Lady Rhys-Williams DBE (1898-1964), one of founder members and Chairman for a period until her death, questionnaires and results from various surveys.

Correspondence; records of involvement in teaching and policy-making in psychiatry, and in treatment, especially of epilepsy.

Harris, Noel Gordon (1897-1963)

Reports, diaries, memoirs, photographs and memorabilia given to the RAMC Museum and Library by former officers and men of the Corps. Some date back to Marlborough's campaigns of the late 17th century; there is also material relating to the continuing European and Imperial conflicts of the 18th and early 19th centuries, the Crimean War (1854-1856), the Boer War and the Balkan conflicts of the early 20th century, the two World Wars, the Korean War and other smaller conflicts thereafter.

Part of the RAMC collection has been returned to the Army Medical Services Museum. In 2016 it changed its name to the Museum of Military Medicine. Please see individual items for further information.
