Michel Odent, whose maternity unit at Pithviers in France became famous as a centre for natural childbirth, explains the history of his ideas about birth and how it should be managed. He visits a maternity unit where he commends the minimal use of pain-relieving drugs in childbirth, which is actually due to shortages. He believes that male participation in childbirth has increased the divorce rate and that drugs given to alleviate pain in labour increase the likelihood of the offspring becoming drug addicts. There are scenes of childbirth including forceps delivery, underwater birth and delivery by Caesarian section.
