Observed at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road, London. A big room, with the atrium of the hospital in the background. The patients are wheeled in here from the theatre. The nuses in recovery look after the patients for about half an hour usually; sometimes the patients have recovered consciousness before leaving the theatre. One of the patients has an oxygen mask. At the far end of the ward is the children's recovery area, where parents are admitted. After recovery, the nurses ring the ward sisters to have the patients taken back to the ward. The uniforms of the recovery nurses used to be white, as shown, but shortly afterwards changed to grey-green

The anterior cruciate ligament is one of the ligaments in the knee joint which bind the femur to the tibia. It is often injured in sport

Beyond a glass screen is a figure on a bed: it is a plastic dummy with a lifelike male human face, containing computer software, the Eagle Simulator. His thorax rises and falls as he breathes. He contains software for reacting to anaesthetic interventions by medical students. The intervention equipment is on the far side of the glass screen and the results are shown on the computer on the near side of the screen. The microphone allows the professor to say "For heavens sake don't do that or he'll have a heart attack and we'll have to start all over again!". The red-stained cloth on the bed is carefully stained by the anaesthesia staff with red food-colouring to give a blood-like appearance. In the distance, a football ground. Called by the artist "Eagle Simulator in the setting sun"

Observed at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, though the surgical team for this operation came to the hospital from outside. The woman from whom the eggs are extracted lies on a table, right, her thighs apart. A surgeon sits in front of her, removing the eggs. On the surgeon's right, a relay of helpers pass the eggs to the person on the left, who fertilises them with a syringe
