Audio recording for an event held online by Wellcome Collection, London, 11 March 2021. Artist and musician Sop and their collaborators reflect on how it felt to be shielding during the Covid-19 pandemic. Sop asked their network of chronically ill friends to respond to the idea proposed in their sound work 'The Den 1'. The recorded responses are from artist and musician Camille Francis Lerner, curator and writer Irene Revell, bookseller Ollie Simpson, Sarah P, and artist and cultural producer Zuleika Lebow, and relate to their contributions to 'Your den', a poster designed by Sop and Yves Sanglante (Wellcome Collection no. 3288057i). "This issue is all about nature. The seeds of this idea were partly sown due to the amount of time we've spent inside over the past few months. Some of us left yearning to be back amongst the trees and flowers again, some of us doing everything we can to bring elements of nature into our homes, our gardens and our balconies. Nature can calm us and it can give us purpose. It persists, it resists and it continues to exist in the face of untold hardships. Maybe this is why we feel such a kinship for our green friends. We received more submissions [essays, illustrations, poems, comics] for this issues than we've ever had before. "At the start of lockdown I started drawing weekly comics as a way to cope, as a distraction, as a way to communicate with pals I couldn't see in real life. I shared the comics online and it made me feel connected to so many people. [...] This is an accidental issue of Cool Schmool collecting those first 4 months of weekly comics as well as some additional comics which never made it online.
