The Concorde study of AZT has raised questions about the efficacy of AZT given to HIV patients before they develop symptoms, in order to delay the onset of AIDS. Wellcome claims dramatic improvements with the early use of AZT but some patients have reacted badly. Bob Thrackles, a haemophiliac, was given AZT and a posthumous case is claiming AZT, not AIDS, actually caused his death. The Concorde study shows that over 3 years AZT does not have long term benefits if taken early, and may have seriously bad side effects. Is the CD4 test sufficiently accurate?
