Parents interview four health professionals and experts about the MMR vaccine and whether it has any link to autism. The experts all explain why the vaccine is safe, that it does not have a link to autism, and that the vaccine's benefits outweigh any side effects. Interviewed are the Public Health Laboratory's Head of Immunisation Dr Elizabeth Miller, the Royal Free Hospital's Head of Child Health Professor Brent Taylor, health visitor Kim Finnegan and the Department of Health's Head of Immunisation Dr David Salisbury.

PC Harris, Head of the Department of Cardiac Medicine Cardio-Thoracic Institute, talks about the biology of the heart muscle. A summary accompanying the cassette reads: "Contraction of the cardiac muscle is performed by the sliding movement of the filaments of the myofibrils. The energy for this purpose is provided by the hydrolysis of ATP. The mitochondria replenish the supply of ATP by oxidative phorylation. The presence of the sodium: potassium exchange pump in the cell wall membrane, together with the varying permeability of the membrane to different ions, leads to a resting transmembrane potential. During excitation the permeability of the membrane changes in a sequential fashion. The action of a number of cardio-active drugs may be explained in this region. The link between excitation and contraction is mediated by calcium ions which are alternately sequested and released by the sarco-plasmic reticulum."

Sir Christopher Booth presents a brief history of the Royal College of Physicians and then gives a detailed explanation of the events leading up to the publishing of their seminal report on the hazards of smoking in 1962.  Among those he discusses are past Presidents of the College, Sir Russell Brain and Robert Platt.  He refers to the first meeting of the Committee to Report on Smoking and Atmospheric Pollution on 15 July 1959 and calls the Smoking and Health report of 1962 "the most important contribution to health by the Royal College this century".

In October 1997, the Princess Royal opened the Wellcome Trust's Human Genome Project Research Centre at Hinxton near Cambridge. The campus is also the seat of the European Bioinformatics Institute, the Sanger Centre of the Wellcome Trust, and the MRC's Human Genome Project Mapping Resource Centre. The aim is to decode more than one-sixth of the human genes by the year 2002. This short film explains some of the work that goes on at Hinxton.

Quest for the code of life.

In 1901, an outbreak of sleeping sickness in Uganda rapidly assumed epidemic proportions. In the spring of 1902, the Royal Society sent a small scientific commission to Entebbe to investigate the cause of the disease. This film highlights the many scientific and professional problems which beset the commission's work, dramatically reconstructing the circumstances leading up to Dr. (later Sir) Aldo Castellani's (1877-1971) discovery of trypanosomes in the cerebrospinal fluid of sleeping sickness victims and his difficult 'encounter' with Colonel David Bruce at Entebbe in February 1903. A lavish historical dramatisation of some of the key figures and events involved in the discovery of the cause of African sleeping sickness around the turn of the century, as seen through the eyes of Sir Patrick Manson (1844-1922), founder of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Dr. Louis Sambon (1865-1931). The film includes material from both 'The Gambian Case' and 'Entebbe Encounter' and was awarded a silver medal at the New York International Film and TV Festival in 1990. An updated version of the 1928 film of the same title made by Sir Thomas Lewis and Sir Henry Dale, a film made for the Royal College of Physicians' commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the publication of William Harvey's book on the circulation of the blood. Introduced and narrated by Sir Henry Dale, it portrays the life and works of William Harvey (1578- 1657), with Dr. Len Goodwin, FRS, reading "in Harvey's voice" from the 1847 English translation of "De Motu Cordis"(1628). Harvey's experimental reasoning is explained with the aid of dissections of the heart and animated diagrams of the circulation of the blood.

William Harvey and the circulation of the blood.

Short documentary film describing the causes and symptoms of hay fever and showing how pollen is collected and made into desensitising sets for sufferers. Grasses are grown for their pollen at a Pollenarium. Dr John Freeman describes how he and Leonard Noon devised a potential treatment for sufferers of hay fever. A detailed sequence shows how the grasses are cut and the pollen collected and dried before being weighed and put into bottles, then taken to the laboratory at St. Mary's Hospital in London. Dilutions of the extracts of the pollens are sealed in small bottles that make up the desensitising sets, used by hospitals, clinics and GPs. We are shown how a Hay Fever sufferer has different extracts tested on their forearm to see which pollens they get an allergic reaction to.  The relevant desensitising set is then prescribed so that the patient can treat herself. The final shot shows a girl who is now able to walk in the countryside, free from her usual Hay Fever symptoms.
