What brought you to our website today?

Professor M.W. Greaves and Dr W.P. Kingston from the Institute of Dermatology lecture on the role of prostaglandins in the inflammatory response of the skin. Includes two experiments; one where Dr Kingston is injected with prostaglandin E1 and another in which suction blisters are raised on a female test subject and their contents examined.

Professor E W Horton lectures on prostaglandins. The lecture is in two parts. Part one covers the biochemistry of prostaglandins, while part two looks at their pharmacology and physiology.

Professor E W Horton lectures on prostaglandins; the lipid compounds that are derived enzymatically from fatty acids which have important functions in the body. The lecture is in two parts. Part one covers the biochemistry of prostaglandins, while part two looks at their pharmacology and physiology.

The first part of a two-part lecture. The structure of the muscle fibre is reviewed, followed by an outline of the history of various theories of muscle contraction. Professor Huxley describes his own experimental work, shows film of muscle contraction under interference microscopy, and outlines the thinking that led to the development of the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction. The programme finishes with a summary of the mechanisim of force generation.

Here, Denis Melrose, Professor of Surgical Science at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, London, discusses different kinds of life support machines for use in major heart and lung surgery.

Thorn discusses changes in respiration during and following exercise. He analyses the physiological processes behind this both in terms of chemical and nervous signals. But in particular, he demonstrates the use of the polarographic oxygen electrode which allows close study of mitochondria, the subcellular particles in which are embedded the respiratory enzyme systems.

Professor Pearse talks about the APUD cell concept. He explains how APUD cells are a series or collection of endocrine cells which can be found in endocrine glands and other organs all over the body and he describes the history of their discovery, leading up to what is currently known about their function today.

The thalassaemia disorders are the most common single gene conditions which produce a major worldwide problem. With the increasing immigrant population, they are often being seen in the United Kingdom. This programme describes the clinical and genetic features of these disorders and reviews recent studies regarding their molecular biology.

In the first of two lectures, Professor Ivor Mills talks about the regulation of sodium excretion by the kidneys. It is a rather technical lecture - Mills himself describes the process of regulated renal sodium excretion as 'one of the most complex mechanisms in physiology'. He gives an account of the history of research into this area, using many detailed charts and diagrams to illustrate his points and highlight the major research breakthroughs of others into this complex field.
