Also the whole question of cholesterol excess in diet etc and experimental work connected with that subject. Hypercholesterinaemia, 'Pseudo-xanthema elasticum'. Also choleolithiasis cases (including cases complicated by cancer). Some cases of 'catarrhal jaundice' (diagnosis). Also cases re diagnosis (such as hydatid of liver, torsion of gall bladder, etc). Re diagnosis of choleolithiasis. Also some cases of simple or uncertain hepatic cirrhosis and hepatomegaly, choleocystectomy (including ritual choleocystectomy) including possible (my later) cases of old perihepatitis. Blood cholesterol : a public health perspective / Wilhelmina Maria Monica Verschuren.

The first in a four-part series in which Richard Hannaford looks at how since the 1950s doctors have continuously researched people's health and lifestyle, leading to epidemiological studies, the results of which we can perhaps now begin to assess. This part focuses on heart disease, in particular the findings of the Seven Countries Study which started in the 1950s and looked at the differing rate of heart attacks across the world. The study had a huge impact on the incidence of heart disease in Finland and still inspires health initiatives today, such as the 'Have a Heart, Paisley' one in Scotland.

Building a healthier Britain. Part 1, Heart disease.

Aimed at the general public, this film explains arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis and how it affects health. Blood in circulation is seen; a comparison is made with blood and traffic congestion. The film explains in readily accessible ways how the hardening of the arteries adversely affect health. An experiment with two beakers demonstrates shows the . How clots form are also described. Diagrams describe how a clot can lead to a heart attack. Researchers realised that atherosclerosis was not just a disease of old age; they looked at cholesterol as the culprit. Fats are looked at in the laboratory; in Europe a study between 1938 and 1948 indicated that diet was involved. 'Harmless molecules of fat' are injected into the body of a man in a research setting so that Geiger counters can identify where the molecules reside ('using atomic energy for medical progress'). In the laboratory, medical research continues.

To begin, Yeo cooks for celebrity cook Ella Mills, who changed to a clean eating diet after being diagnosed with postural tachycardia syndrome. She recounts the events leading up to her deciding to change her diet. Clips of Instagram users following the #cleaneating trend are shown talking about how they use the site for guidance. Yeo makes Bone Broth from the gluten free, grain free cookbook Hemsley Hemsley: Good + Simple (2016), and visits Mohamed Aboughazala at Manna Dew Bakery. Yeo then visits Author Dr William Davis, who promotes a grain free diet in his book What Belly (2011). He describes his discoveries after putting his patients on a grain free, low-carbohydrate diet to lower their LDL cholesterol. Yeo and Davis visit a wheat farm and discuss the link between wheat and the rise in coeliac disease and other auto-immune diseases in the Western world. Next, Dr Alessio Fasano describes his work researching coeliac disease. He exhibits a selection of test mice that have been genetically engineered to digest gluten differently. Yeo explains the alkaline diet, laid out by Natasha Corrett in the cookbook Honestly Healthy: Cleanse (2015). He then visits Robert O. Young, author of The PH Miracle: Balance Your Diet, Reclaim Your Health (2002), which promotes following an alkaline diet. Young explains his interpretation of the scientific theory pleomorphism, devised by 19th Century Scientist Antoine Bechamp. Yeo talks again to Mills, who talks about the resources she used to help her make a decision to change her diet. Yeo then visits Nutritional Biochemist Professor T. Colin Campbell, author of The China Study (2005), which advocates a plant-based diet and claims that eating animal protein increases the likelihood of developing cancer. Yeo then revisits Young, who describes his cancer treatment programme at the PH Miracle Ranch. Yeo explains an investigation into Youngs business by The Medical Board of California in 2011. Yeo and Young talk about a patient with pancreatic cancer, Julia van der Haagen, who died whilst attending the healing programme at Youngs Miracle Ranch. Afzal Amin then talks about Naima Houder-Mohammed, who also attended the healing after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Yeo explains the details of lawsuits against Young, and that he has since been incarcerated for posing as a doctor and practicing pseudo-science.

This is the first part of a talk by Herman Dowling, Lecturer in Medicine in the postgraduate department at Hammersmith Hospital, London, and Deputy Director at the Medical Research Council's Intestinal Malabsorption Group. In this first part he talks about the different types of human gallstones, micelle formation, micellar solubilisation of biliary cholesterol, the enteropepatic circulation of bile acids, its role in blie lipid secretion and the formation of normal and supersaturated bile. The effect of ileal resection and a reduced bile acid pool on the formation of supersaturated bile and gallstones is also described.
