What brought you to our website today?

An animated cartoon on smoking and health. The villain, Old Nick O'Teen , disguises himself as an 18-year-old motor cyclist, the better to lure children into the cigarette habit. Fourteen-year-old Sam falls into the trap, but after awesome visions of his future, expert advice from a doctor, and straight talk from a friendly lorry-driver renounces the habit.

Shows a full thickness schleral resection under local anaesthetic and after canthotomy in two cases. The first case is a girl aged 17 and the second patient is also female, aged 46. In the first case the retina was replaced and in the second case it was not; the improvement to sight is indicated by an intertitle.

This amateur film, which has been edited semi-professionally with additional intertitles and maps to orientate the viewer, consists of footage shot in the first part of the BMA's World Tour. The opening sequences are of a woman's hand in close-up turning the pages of a journal. Embarkation is via the boat train to Southampton (bystanders wave the departing train on) and then leaving for New York via the Cunard Line liner, MV Georgic. Games such as quoits are played on deck. The Statue of Liberty is seen as the ship arrives; there are views of Manhattan and the harbour from the ship. The group travel to Chicago (missing out the hospital tour in New York City and Washington). They stop at a Mexican village. Hereafter the film duplicates the material shown on Part 1a 'Across America' with footage of the Rio Grande, Grand Canyon, Los Angeles and Hollywood. The party then travel to Santa Monica; exteriors of the Bath House are followed by wide shots of the beach with people bathing and a small marina with a number of boats, then Beverley Hills. At 13 minutes duration there is a short sequence describing route 2 via Liverpool with people departing from the port accompanied by tugs. There are views of Toronto and, spectacular shots of Niagara.

A film about the role of the Community Health Council (CHC), a body that directs public opinion on healthcare and any improvements that can be made in the NHS. The film deals specificially with CHCs in Wales. Partly animated.

Unforeseen emergencies in the daily lives of a private secretary, a housewife and a transport driver make each of them acutely conscious of the need for first-aid training and simple nursing experience. These they acquire by joining the National Hospital Service Reserve as auxiliary members and completing the basic training, followed by several visits to a hospital.

Portrays the work of the Wellcome Trust-funded Metabolism Research Unit in the University of the West Indies, Kingston, Jamaica, for the clinical and biochemical study of marasmus and kwashiorkor in malnourished children. The clinical pathology of these diseases is shown in some detail and their treatment and management explained.

This film shows how clinical observation and instrumental analysis of the wave forms characteristic of abnormal venous pulsation can assist in the differential diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities. A brief historical survey of Sir James Mackenzie's classic work on the venous pulse is followed by a short demonstration of the instrumental techniques used in the analysis of the wave form of the venous pulsation in the neck. The mechanism and production of each of the component waves are described, and the phenomena shown in a healthy subject before clinical cases are used to demonstrate the characteristic modifications of the venous pulse found in patients with cardiac abnormalities.

An interview with Professor Bill Inman (by Dr Stephen Lock), one of the key figures in the early days of drug regulation in the UK. The interview takes place in Professor Inman's house near Southampton. He is in a wheelchair due to polio as a medical student. He describes how the Committee was set up in 1964 as a result of the thalidomide 'scandal'. At the time Inman was working at ICI. A number of committees relating to the safety of new drugs were established. He describes the 'yellow cards' (feedback questionnaires) which were returned by general practitioners and doctors indicating adverse side-effects to any drugs both new or old. An early success was the removal of Benziodarone which was removed from the market as it caused jaundice. The committee was instrumental in establishing a link between the contraceptive pill (specifically high doses of oestrogen) and thrombosis. Relating to this, a study was commissioned in 1966/67 and data was gathered by what he describes as 'Derek's Dolls', personable (presumably young) women to interview doctors about their experiences of prescribing the drug. The study was published in 1968. Inman contacted the MRC (Medical Research Council) but it took a while for them to react. Inman had strong views regarding the independence of drug regulation.

This film demonstrates the responses produced by stimulating certain areas of the brain and effects of excision of two areas of the motor cortex. It opens with shots of Sir Charles Sherrington handling preserved monkey brains and quotations from his writings. The work of David Ferrier is mentioned briefly before turning to John Fulton's book; 'Philosopy of the Nervous System'. Hereafter, the histological preparations and diagrams which demonstrate the distribution of the giant nerve cells and course of their long axones are based on Fulton's research. A monkey is anaesthetised, part of its brain is exposed and its motor functions are tested by means of an electric probe. The monkey is then seen recovered, albeit with some impairment to its reflexes in comparison to its cage companion.

After the opening intertitle, a naked male patient is seen laying on his front with his back arched back. An intertitle says 'Schnek's method of local anesthesia in fractures of the vertebral bodies'; line drawings illustrate this. Case I is a naked male wearing a plaster of Paris body brace. The affected vertebra are drawn on the plaster. The patient turns around and squats down. More drawings follow. Case II illustrates another compression fracture; a patient appears as before. Active rehabilitation is encouraged and both the patients practise for the camera. One lifts a 35kg bag and places it on his head; the other lifts 40kg. In strengthening the abdominal muscles; one patient stands on the other's stomach AND places the 40kg weight on his head! Case I; the man has recovered and demonstrates his strength (he is naked). He picks up patient II and balances him on his shoulders. Case II also demonstrates his stength on gymnasium rings. There are two slow motion sequences which complete the film; one patient uses chairs as a vaulting horse and then does a forward and backward flip.

This amateur film, which has been edited semi-professionally with additional intertitles and maps to orientate the viewer, consists of footage shot on the BMA's World Tour. This reel has mostly unique material and begins with views of Singapore harbour. A traffic policeman is seen in operation - the traffic is very light. A garden party is given by the Singaporean branch of the BMA; it's clearly a mixed gathering of Europeans, Asians and Eurasians. There is a snake charmer. Next, onto Kuala Lumpur to visit a leper colony, the tin mines and to see rubber tapping. There is extraordinary footage of a man's heart beating in his open chest cavity. Dr Watson Smith stands by a rubber tree. There are brief exterior shots of the Selangor Club, the BMA headquarters. The next stop is Penang before the homeward journey via S.S. Rajputana to London. At the dockside, boats are loaded. Arriving at Colombo, the group is welcomed by the Ceylon branch of the BMA. Then onwards to Bombay - another sequence of a snake charmer. Venom is extracted (duplicate material). There is a reception by the Bombay branch of the BMA together with mute footage of the meeting.
