Tacitus, Histories IV.77-78. The print shows the aftermath of a surprise attack by the German coalition (Batavi, Ubii, Lingones, Bructeri, and Tencteri) on the Roman camp at Augusta Treverorum (Trier). The Romans and their allies led by Cerealis counterattacked while the Germans were arguing with each other about their shares of the booty. On the same day the Romans captured and destroyed the German camp: "obstitit vincentibus pravum inter ipsos certamen omisso hoste spolia consectandi. Cerialis ut incuria prope rem adflixit, ita constantia restituit; secutusque fortunam castra hostium eodem die capit excinditque."

An episode in the medieval romance, Cantar (Leyenda, Historia) de los siete infantes de Lara. On the orders of Doña Lambra, her servant had struck one of the sons in the face with a blood-soaked cucumber. The brothers resolve that if the servant does not run away from them, they will excuse the insult on the ground that he is mad, but if he does run away, they will avenge the insult with the sword. He attempts to flee, and they attack him with swords, driven on by personifications of Madness and Revenge, who fly above them. One of the brothers seizes Doña Lambra's cloak in order to smear it in the servant's blood. Two men on the right try to dissuade the brothers from violence

Right, masked dancers and other pleasure-seekers. Left, a poor family seeking alms and a sick man in bed being attended by a physician: these represent the statement that "the gout, stone, want and care Will seize thee soon: pain will thy hours waste, And tedious sufferings make thee sadly pay A cruel interest for enjoyments past" (translated from Horace?)

The engraving illustrates a couplet by Horace (Epistles I.2): "Quae laedunt oculos festinas demere: si quid / Est animum, differs tempus curandi in annum" (Those things which harm the eyes you hasten to eliminate. As for those which harm the soul, you postpone the time of cure from year to year).

Ovid, Metamorphoses III. Actaeon accompanied by his hound enters a cave in the background. In the foreground Diana and two other women recoil towards the picture plane, trying to conceal themselves. "Diane dans le bain accompagnée des nimphes de sa suite, & Acteon changé en cerf. Ce tableau est bien peint, & fait un grand effet. Mais pourqui pervertir ainsi l'ordre du sujet? Pourquoi mettre sur le premier plan les figures accessoires? Pourquoi rejetter dans le fond celles sur qui roule l'action principale, et les disposer de manière qu'on a peine à les appercevoir? Les défauts méritent d'etre relevés par tout où ils se rencontrent, & Othon Venius est autant moins excusable d'etre tombé en celui-ci, qu'il lui étoit aisé de se retourner autrement, lui dont le génie étoit si abondant, & qui possedoit d'ailleurs si parfaitement les regles de son art. C'étoit un esprit cultivé par les belles-lettres: il avoit inspiré le meme gout à Rubens, & ce dernier avouoit qu'il lui étoit redevable des grand principes qu'il a bien sçû mettre en pratique."--Mariette. op. cit., p. 10
