What brought you to our website today?

The names of the acu-moxa locations of yangqiao mai (Yang Heel Vessel) are inscribed on a human figure. Yangqiao mai is one of the Eight Extraordinary Channels (qi jing ba mai). Originating at the shenmai (Extending Vessel) point at the outside of the heel, it runs upwards through the outer ankle and the back of the calf, along the outside of the thigh, through the hips and sides to the outer shoulder, and along the neck to the corner of the mouth. It comes into confluence with the taiyang channel and yinqiao mai (Yin Heel Vessel) in the eye socket, then ascends again to the forehead where it joins the foot shaoyang channel. It originates at the jingming (Eye Bright); point, in the canthus of the eye, and terminates at the zhiyin (Reaching Yin) point, on the outside of the little toe. The names of the acu-moxa locations of the kidney channel of foot shaoyin are inscribed on a human figure. The kidney channel of foot shaoyin is one of the Twelve Channels. The names of the acu-moxa locations of the Heart Envelope (xinzhu) channel of hand jueyin are inscribed on a human figure. The Heart Envelope channel of hand jueyin is one of the Twelve Channels. It originates at the tianchi (Celestial Pool) point, in the armpit, and terminates at the zhongchong (Middle Rushing) point, on the inside of the middle finger. The names of the acu-moxa locations of daimai (Belt Vessel) are inscribed on a human figure. Daimai is one of the Eight Extraordinary Channels (qi jing ba mai). Originating at jixie (a location in the side of the thorax corresponding to the cartilage of the 11th and 12th vertebrae), it runs around the waist like a belt, hence its name. The illustration shows an old man sitting cross-legged, naked to the waist. He wears his hair in a topknot and has a moustache and a long beard, which he is stroking with his fingers. Various acu-moxa locations of the small intestine channel of hand taiyang are marked and labelled on his upper body. The small intestine channel of hand taiyang is one of the Twelve Channels. It originates at the shaoze (Lesser Marsh) point and terminates at the tinggong (Palace of Hearing) point, on the face. For a list of point names, see 'Lettering'.

 N.B. The acupuncture charts in the Shou Li Lu ('Ancient Oak Hut') series of books were made in the early 20th century, in the last years of the Qing period (1644-1911). However, the old man in this illustration wears his hair in the style of the preceding Ming dynasty (1368-1644), which was overthrown by the Qing, while the human figures in the remaining 19 illustrations are almost all hairless, and none of them has the distinctive queue and shaven forehead of the Qing. Presumably, the artist intended by this means to express opposition to the Qing regime.

The names of the acu-moxa locations of the large intestine channel of hand yangming are inscribed on the figure of a child. The large intestine channel of hand yangming is one of the Twelve Channels.
