Set in a hospital ward, with curtains around individual beds. "Mexicans": presumably referring to a pitched battle in a plaza in the French military campaign in Mexico 1861-1866, in support of a Catholic Mexican Empire friendly to France and hostile to the United States

A French soldier boasts that he and six others have 'evacuated' 300 Mexicans from a square;a military surgeon, holding an enema, counters that he has 'evacuated' many more single-handed. Coloured lithograph by Draner (Jules Renard).

The wagon and the two stretcher bearers in the background appear to be contributions of the American ambulance service which operated during the siege. British, Dutch, Irish, Austrian, and Belgian Red Cross societies also sent aid. The cynical attitude of the cigar-smoking man in the foreground is described as having been found in the French population rather than among the foreign volunteers: "in Paris and in the provinces, men hoping to avoid military service were found dressed as volunteer nurses with the Red Cross armband"--among examples cited by Seltzer, op. cit.

In the background are bodies of dead horses and people, and ruined buildings of Paris. On the left is a retired professor of surgery and member of the Légion d'Honneur who has joined the Garde Nationale, a reserve militia re-mobilised owing to the war with Prussia. On the right is a younger man, his former pupil, now serving as an army surgeon
