    An increasing amount of drainage work is being carried out on l)ehalf of private owners generally in connection with joint drains. 83 new drains were tested and 66 were ai)])roved. 149 old drains were tested or exposed. 29 of these were found to be defective. (ii) Public Cleansing. While it was possible to empty dustbins with a greater frequency than obtained in most West Riding areas, we did not get back to our pre war standard of emptying all bins at weekly intervals. This may be brought about in 1948. Salvage brought in the amazing revenue of £2,356, an increase of £317 over last year’s income. This was almost entirely due to increased collection of waste paper, nearly all other commodities showing a decline. The total weight of waste paper was 288 tons which is equivalent to 23 cwts. per 1.000 of the population per month, or more than double the average. Des])ite this satisfactory state of affairs,, it is true to say that hundreds of tons of paper is still wasted by being mixed with ashes and placed in dustbins. A little more care and thought by many householders would benefit themselves and the community. Kitchen waste declined despite further publicity and issue of individual containers to a number of householders. This step caused a temporary increase in collected material, but it doon dropped and it was found that the waste was being given to pig and poultry keepers. Sales of scrap metal and baled tins declined. The price obtained for baled tins is not such as to encourage Local Authorities to carry on with this activity. Ashplace conversion continued, despite the peculiar difficulties occasioned by extensive joint ownership and shortage of dustbins. The number was reduced to 33 and it is confidently anticipated that few of these will remain by the end of 1948. Household refuse was disposed of by means of controlled ti])ping at the following sites— Dowley Gap, Harden Memorial Hall Grounds, Lee Farm, Wilsden, Ellar Carr, Cullingworth. The tips at Wilsden and Harden have a limited life and fresh tips will have to be found unless the refuse is diverted to Ringley or Cullingworth. The two latter tips have a caj^acity for many years yet. Street Cleansing was ‘mechanised’ during the year, a Rrockhouse Lewin Sweeper Collector being delivered in September.
