About this work

Description

Part 5 of 5, Val McDermid talks about her new book, 'The Anatomy of Crime', launched prior to a Wellcome Collection exhibition on the subject in February 2015. She explores history and practices in forensics science referencing historical cases as well as those in the more recent news. McDermid turns her gaze to forensic psychologists. Dr Mike Berry is a criminal profiler. Criminal profiling is a new tool in the forensics tool box; there's software which identifies the most likely place they live based in crime scenes. In real life, coercion is not permitted or even effective. Upbringing and heredity has a defining impact on criminal behaviour. The first documented courtroom in the UK was 1219. McDermid provides evidence that juries can easily be influenced by the demeanour of the defendant. However, juries are still sending innocent people to jail.
